Adding Equity to Nonprofits
Most children born into poverty in NC won’t reach the state’s median income as adults, according to MDC. In studies by Harvard University and University of California-Berkley, Durham and Wake counties rank in the lowest 6% of counties in the country in upward mobility. A child of color or low income has a better chance of getting ahead in Queens or Oakland than in Raleigh or Durham. Why? Many organizations are working on obvious intentional racism and classism causes, such as redlining, slavery, and voter suppression. But before nonprofit leaders can truly help the people they serve in this demographic, they need to recognize and understand the less obvious causes – the effects of generational poverty and learned helplessness. This session will share learning and advice from client stories and case studies.
