In a time of accelerating disruption—from shifting federal funding to increased community needs—traditional long-range strategic planning may no longer serve nonprofits effectively. In this interactive session, moss+ross partners Dave Monaco and Jeanne Murray will be joined by leaders from one of their nonprofit clients (the clients may include The East Coast Greenway Alliance; The Shuford Program in Entrepreneurship at UNC-Chapel Hill; The Green Chair Project) to blend real-world experience with proven tools to help nonprofit leaders develop short-term, high-impact strategic plans grounded in today’s realities. Drawing on moss+ross’ proven strategic planning framework and practical experience with dozens of clients this year, the session introduces a new way of thinking about strategy—one that maintains bold ambition within pressing constraints to unlock breakthrough possibilities. Participants will be introduced to four stages of responding to constraint—Victim, Neutralizing, Responsive Transformer, and Proactive Transformer—and learn how to shift organizational mindset and fundraising strategy accordingly. Through engaging activities and discussion, participants will: Identify key organizational constraints and reframe them as sources of creative leverage; Practice “Can-If” thinking to develop fresh, actionable solutions; Explore how boards and leadership teams can support adaptive planning; and Learn from NC nonprofit leaders who have pivoted strategy for their national nonprofit in response to external shifts. Attendees will leave with a facilitation-ready worksheet for strategic planning, communication strategies for building internal alignment, and new tools to lead with agility and purpose.
